“Living Victoriously in the Power of God”

“You come to me with sword and spear and javelin,” David told the Philistines,
“but I come to you in the name of the Lord God Almighty!”
I Samuel 17:45

This selection of Scripture comes from the story of David and Goliath. Goliath was more than a match for any man – at 10 ft. tall, wearing armor weighing about 150 pounds, and carrying a spear weighing 15 pounds, he had God’s people frozen with fear.

With Goliath looming before them the Israelites could not act. They chose not to rely on God Almighty to give them the victory over their enemy. Into this scene comes David, a shepherd boy from Bethlehem. He was amazed that Goliath was insulting God. David could not understand the people's lack of trust in God Almighty.

As parents and teachers, we have been given the privilege of leading our children to Jesus. God has promised His blessing on this sacred task, but we often, like Israel, fail to take the Lord at His Word.

So what Goliaths are in our path? What are those things that cause us to doubt God and His promises? The devil, the world and our own sinful flesh are trying to get us to put aside God's directives about raising children. Because others are “doing it” we permit our kids to be exposed to worldly values, through TV, the internet, movies, music and so on.

We need to be like David, and rely on God's strength. As we lead our children toward being mature Christians, we have God's promise to empower us and our kids as they face their Goliaths.

Goliaths? Sure we have them! But we can face them with the same confidence David had, because we also are armed with the Lord’s strength.

So as parents and teachers, let's rely on God's power as we lead our children toward being mature Christians.

Yours, growing and seeking to guide others in knowledge of Jesus our Savior,

Pastor Kloha
