"Peace and Quiet!"

The story is told of a mother who telephoned to have a taxi sent to her home. When the cab arrived, the woman brought out three young children and instructed the to get into the cab. She told the driver to put the meter on and that she would return in a few minutes. After twenty minutes of waiting, the cab driver didn't know what to do. But then the woman came back and asked what she owed. Puzzled, the driver asked if she was going anyplace. She replied: “No, I had to make a long distance telephone call and I needed some peace and quiet.”

Peace and Quiet! That's what all of us need from time to time. We need a time of rest from daily pressures and responsibilities. We need an escape from telephones, interruptions, and noise. For many people it seems peace and quiet are a luxury — and infrequent respite from a frantic world.

But just because this world moves at a frantic pace, it doesn't mean we need do the same. That's easier said than done, however, as we get caught up in meetings, appointments, parties, work, family obligations, and the stress of life. We sometimes forget about God as we struggle to get things done in time. And in the end, we wonder where all our time was spent.

So how do we find quiet time? Just as Jesus told His disciples: “Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest,” we too, need to do the same. Perhaps we need to reserve some quiet time first thing in the morning so we can focus our lives and meditate on God's Word. Or maybe we need to take a break at noon for more than just lunch and experience some food for the soul. God has given us imagination and time. It's up to us to find our own quiet moments.

We can certainly tithe our time, giving God the first fruits of a new day. Quiet time spent with God can be our best moments as we offer ourselves and time to God for direction and guidance. Both our bodies and spirit is need of the peace that only God can provide.

So come by yourself and be refreshed by the love, encouragement, and power that comes from no other source. When you do, God will provide strength for the day ad the peace and quiet that you need, no matter how busy you are.

IT IS BETTER TO TAKE REFUGE IN THE LORD THAN TO TRUST IN MAN.” – Psalms 118:8
